Welcome Friends!

W

e are pleased to present to you the 2023 edition of the Secrets Audio/Video Showcase. We launched this new method of product information and outreach last year and experienced a great response from our readers and industry friends with many compliments. Our second edition features all-new products and editorial content for your reading pleasure. We hope you enjoy scrolling through the oversize interactive pages and absorbing all the wonderful visual and technical content.

The concept behind the A/V Showcase has always been to allow manufacturers a way to leverage their creative and technical assets in a different and eye-catching manner. This gives you, the reader, a closer look at multiple company products in one easy-to-use location. We think it ends up complimenting the in-depth reviews on our main website rather nicely, and we hope you’ll agree.

If you are a manufacturer, we invite you to be a part of the 2023 Secrets A/V Showcase. We can continue to add content and update the issue throughout the year, and we would love to have you join the growing list of participants.

As the last couple of years have certainly been trying ones worldwide, our abiding wish for 2023 is really just a simple request. We hope this year brings us all a little closer together and that we can find some more of those special moments, wherever we are, to enjoy the music we love in the manner we choose.

Onward and upward!

Focal

The French brand Focal expands its collection of loudspeakers for Home with Vestia. This line comprises five models and has been designed for high-quality music enjoyment and Home Cinema experiences delivered by Focal’s renowned savoir-faire in acoustic. The brand which is recognized by the French government as a French “Living Heritage Company” chose its exclusive Slatefiber cone for the Vestia range.

Born from the merger in 2011 of Focal, a world leader in acoustic sound made in France for over 40 years, and Naim Audio, a world leader in British-made hi-fi electronics for 50 years, VerVent Audio Group’s brand subsidiaries signal a new investment phase and direction for VerVent in the US and Canada. By creating its own distribution entity, the group is striving to turn the North American territory into the market leader for Focal and Naim.

Both are recognized as exceptional brands in their countries: Naim is a multiple Queen’s Award winner, while Focal is designated by the French state as an ‘Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant’. Together, they have united their unique areas of excellence and innovation and constitute a reference point in the world.

Focal Vestia High-Fidelity Loudspeakers

Focal engineers succeeded in exploiting the full potential of this cone to achieve an impressively faithful mid-range rendering, alongside a deep and articulated bass. The cone is made from recycled, non-woven carbon fibers and thermoplastic polymer; the combination of these two materials results in excellent performance, in terms of sound velocity as well as rigidity and damping. The new Aluminum/Magnesium ‘M’-shaped TAM tweeter, meanwhile, is inherited from the Motorities division. It has been adapted for traditional Hi-Fi listening, offering precise and natural treble reproduction.

Harman

A HERITAGE OF EXCELLENCE. The JBL L75ms Music System caters to the enthusiast who seeks an easier way to listen to their music collection without sacrificing acoustic performance.

HARMAN International
I see myself as a technician, as an engineer. My first priority every day is to think in terms of how we can take the company further in terms of good sound. It may sound trivial, but I believe as others do, that it’s about reproducing sound, as true to nature, as possible. The clarity in the midrange, the fact that you can see the driver of the speaker as an acoustic lens. One with very little distortion of the image that also provides clear access to the message, or the motive, of the recording. That is what we strive for.

The JBL L75ms

As a modern re-imagining of the traditional Hi-Fi system, the L75ms finds its design inspiration from the JBL Classic Series with which it shares its walnut wood veneer cabinet finish and black Quadrex foam grille. Behind that retro appearance lies thoroughly modern acoustic technology including high-res audio capability and a wealth of wired and wireless connectivity.

We Need a New OPPO…NOW!

by CARLO LO RASO

I

am annoyed.

That’s not really anything new, I get annoyed with a great many things on a seemingly more regular basis. But to you know-it-alls and naysayers out there that insist physical media is dead and streaming is king, you can just stuff it as far as I’m concerned. I like and continue to buy physical media and I demand someone make a high-quality device to play it all, properly and with excellent results. The last company to make a player that came close to doing it all was OPPO.

Speaker Isolation, The Tweak That Actually Works

by Chris Eberle

I

n HiFi, many tweaks claim to improve sound quality, but the isolation of speakers and their component parts is one that truly makes an audible difference.

Audiophiles know from their research that there are countless devices, components, bits, and bobs (some, rather creatively marketed) that claim to improve the sound quality of our systems. From cable elevators to little metal bowls, enthusiasts have sought to find ways to make music reproduction more realistic. We can pour money into electronics and advanced speaker designs but sometimes, seemingly minor details can make a huge difference.

To Subwoof or Not to Subwoof

by Craig Chase
Close up of speaker feet at bottom of speaker

What is the purpose of a Subwoofer?

S

ubwoofers make deep bass. Specifically, a good subwoofer will deliver bass that can enhance speakers from 120 Hz down to 32 Hz or deeper. Some of the better subwoofers can deliver bass to 20 Hz, with the largest capable of going as deep as 5 Hz in a proper room. This wide variety of frequency limits for various subwoofers can cause a lot of confusion. Add to this the hype that frequents the arena of subwoofers, and many people just don’t want to bother.
